Functional Behavior Assessment The purpose of a functional behavior assessment is to collect behavioral data about a student. This assessment is usually completed when behavior interventions are not working with a particular student. When completing a FBA you want to find out if there are certain situations, times, classes, etc. in which the behavior occurs. You also want to try to discover what, if anything, triggers the behavior. The functional behavior assessment must be descriptive and specific. It also needs to address the duration, intensity, and frequency of the behavior. All of the information in the functional behavior assessment must be based off of data.

Behavior Plans A behavior plan, or behavior intervention plan, is usually created for a student after a functional behavior assessment has been completed. A behavior plan provides the student with a positive replacement behavior that can take the place of the unwanted behavior. Here are the steps for creating a behavior intervention plan:
1. Identify the target behavior (there may be more than one unwanted behavior, but it is important to focus on the most serious problem in the plan. 2. Identify the replacement behavior 3. Identify the way or ways in which you will teach the positive replacement behavior 4. Identify the skills that need to be taught 5. Identify preventative strategies that can help minimize the occurrence of the unwanted behavior 6. Identify the types of reinforcement that you will use to reinforce the positive replacement behavior 7. Create a plan to follow when the unwanted behavior occurs If you would like to learn more about behavior intervention plans, please feel free to visit the website below: http://www.pent.ca.gov/beh/behplan.htm |
