Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder often struggle in the classroom. These students may have a hard time focusing or sitting still, and as a result they may disrupt the students around them. Below, I have created a list of strategies and techniques that can be used with ADHD students to help keep them on task.
1. Provide fidgets, or stress balls for the student to manipulate during class time
2. Allow the student to sit on an exercise ball instead of in a chair
3. Keep on task time short, as opposed to long
4. Provide breaks in instruction in which the student can get up and move around
5. Incorporate movement into lessons- this can be done using Brain Gym
6. Allow the student to stand up during instruction as long as he can still touch his desk
7. Give instructions one at a time, and repeat them if the student asks you to do so
8. Establish a warning signal with the student to let him know when his behavior is inappropriate
9. Seat the student away from the windows and the door in order to minimize distractions
10. Keep the room from being overstimulating by limiting the number of posters and decorations
11. Create a quiet area in which the student can work
